¿Qué importancia crees que tiene la geometría a la hora de seleccionar la herramienta?

La geometría de la herramienta tiene una importancia máxima, ya que de este factor depende el tipo de operación a realizar, el acabado del mismo y todas las cuestiones técnicas para un correcto proceso de mecanizado.

Como ejemplo diré que la geometría de una herramienta no tiene que ser igual para un desbaste o para un acabado, tampoco tiene que ser la misma para alcanzar una tolerancia de unas características o de otras.

Many factors influence the selection of the optimal tool best suited to our operational characteristics, and one of them is also the geometry of the tool.

A key factor of this parameter is the angle at which it attack the workpiece, because depending on the operation will be required to make it's necessary one kind or another. If this is not chosen properly the impact of the tool against piece can involve an excessive wear and result in poor quality of manufactured product.

Thus, we mustn't only find the best tool material for certain work situations, but combine this with the correct choice of geometry.

The geometry seems to be very important because of a bad choice will influence the final end, the accuracy and the efficiency and the life time of the cutting tool.

Another very important factors are the angles between the faces of the cutting tool and the workpiece.This angles influence in several final characteristics such as

- The formation of chips

-The final quality of the ending

- The cutting force needed

- The power consumed.

- The maximum hardness level of the material to be machined

,etc.

some important angles mentioned are:

- The angle between the machining plane and the base plane.

The machining plane:tangent to the machined surface,passing through the side-cutting edge.

The base plane: parallel to the longitudinal and transverse feeds of the cutting tool.

- The side rake angle(λ and y):is the angle between the top surface of the tool and the plane perpendicular to the cutting plane

- The nose angle Ɛ is the angle between the projections of the cutting edges on the base plane

- etc.

The geometry is very important, since according to the finished end there will be necessary to take a tool or other one, this is due to the fact that the angle of assault of the tool will give the final precision, and a bad decision will produce mistakes in the finished one.

Depending of the machining operation that we will be perform, it's important to choose the correct geometry of the cutting tool, especially the angles that make its shape, because each edge depending of its angle is prepared to attack the piece differently, and make the proper cutting of that edge with a perfect finish. If each process is done with the appropriate tool geometry, we will achieve greater efficiency, economy and better final quality .
