GNOSS guide for... professors

Conversation environments on the Net have entered the university boosted by new generations of scholars and teachers who understand and work with normality and success in web 2.0. The connection and dissemination of knowledge on college campuses are linked to the use of new tools and services on the Internet. GNOSS may be a good bet for collaborative work.


Step by step
The college professor can take a quick tour through the GNOSS services and contents from the guide ‘Discovering GNOSS in ten steps’. In a first reading he may think of some application of this network features to his work. We can go into them in depth.
Information filter and reputation channel
GNOSS communities are spaces where users share information on topics they have common interests in. In those communities, users select and provide content on which they also talk and make assessments about what they consider appropriate.
The college professor can lead a trend or a specific theme in which he wants to work his reputation or disseminate his knowledge. For example, in GNOSS, concepts like 'Green Competitiveness'  or 'Co-development', have already open communities where professors and students share and disseminate knowledge.
Thanks to its semantic technology, GNOSS enables the professor to disseminate quickly the knowledge, as the tagging and categorization of the shared documents help to gain presence and visibility in search engines like Google or Bing.
For both university students and professors, communities are a meeting space where they get selected information (communities are chaired by managers with a reputation in the community topic). In addition, they can establish contacts with experts or researchers on that subject.
Working groups and document management
GNOSS communities have more utilities in the development of a subject within a specialty. For instance, they can be the space where a professor shares the content he is teaching in class. In this way he need not send emails, lists… He creates the community and his students enter it, communicate and work with him.
The same thing applies to the students: a GNOSS community is a space that enables collaborative management of works for a subject. It offers great possibilities in the document managemen: a students group can write a paper, work it out and evolve it in the same space with corrections or new contributions. GNOSS shows the document history and ensures that no document or subsequent versions are lost. This concept can be applied to the research groups at university. 
And important question: GNOSS enables you to work from anywhere in the world. Only an Internet connection is needed.
Teamwork with the utmost privacy
GNOSS allows the professor to have the confidentiality and privacy needed to develop his work, both with his personal identity and the visibility of the communities he leads. How? From a user standpoint, when signing up for GNOSS, a professor chooses whether he is visible to other GNOSS members and wants external search engines to find you. On the other hand, he also decides whether he shows his biography and resources in public. Later, he can edit these details from 'Edit Profile' in 'My Profile' from his drop-dawn menu.
There are also some possibilities to work in public or in private in the GNOSS communities. To get the maximum confidentiality, the university professional can request a private community in which a user (in this case, a member of his students group or his research group) needs an invitation to access it. The contents will be visible within GNOSS, but never beyond its area, so the search engines, like Google or Bing, won’t index the resources.
If this privacy level is not enough, there's another possibility: a ‘private room’. This space doesn´t appear neither in GNOSS directory nor in search engines. To be a member of it, you have to receive the invitation of its manager.

One of the latest GNOSS news is the ‘Collective thinking’ tools, specifically the swot service. From GNOSS, a professor can promote a collective analysis on a particular subject or agent in a social context.
Trends at University 2.0
GNOSS works as a radar of trends and new ideas and projects launched in the online and offline ‘worlds’. In the case of university, the GNOSS Team has lauched the University 2.0 community, which deals with how the educational innovation promotes the university development.
